Renee M. Howayeck represents students with disabilities and their parents regarding special education and school discipline matters. She advises on matters regarding special education evaluation, eligibility, and determination; disputes with school districts regarding special education, Individualized Education Plan (IEP) development, and program placement; suspension and expulsion hearings and proceedings before the Bureau of Special Education Appeals (BSEA). Attorney Howayeck also practices in the areas of municipal law, employment discrimination, sexual harassment, disability, and personal injury matters, as well as the general practice of law. Prior to joining Gary P. Howayeck, P.C., she worked as a law clerk to Attorney (now the Honorable) Joseph I. Macy. Ms. Howayeck has been a member of the Massachusetts Bar since 1998 and holds membership before the United States District Court for Massachusetts. She is a member of the Council of Parent Attorneys and Advocates (COPAA) and was a 2015 recipient of a First Justices Award for Pro Bono Public Excellence for her special education advocacy. Attorney Howayeck is appointed by the Massachusetts Department of Education and Secondary Education to serve as a Special Education Surrogate Parent for children in the custody of the Department of Children and Families. She also serves on the Board of Trustees for the Argosy Collegiate Charter School, the Board of Directors of People, Incorporated, the Fall River Municipal Credit Union, and Bristol Elder Services, and is a member of the Fall River Sewer Commission.
